Brick Walkway – How to Create an Elegant Entry Way

August 09, 2007 By: Mister Fixit Category: Home No Comments →

The use of Bricks or Pavers to create a walkway or patio complements a home in a way that is unmatched. It adds a level of quality and elegance to a home entrance that can not be achieved with either concrete or asphalt. Brick and Pavers also come in many different colors and shapes allowing for unique color schemes and patterns to be achieved. In addition, installing a Brick or Paver walkway does not necessarily require a pro. With some basic knowledge and a relatively simple walkway plan, a homeowner is capable of undertaking such a project.

The key to installing a Brick or Paver Walkway is to first properly prepare the area where the pavers are to be installed. The area should be dug out at least a foot down, removing all topsoil and clay soil. In addition, string lines should be strung on each side of the walkway. The string lines indicate the finished height of the walkway.

Once the area has been dug down, 3/4” gravel stone should be laid in and tamped down tightly. Then 2” of sand, or stone dust should be spread over the gravel. Again the stone dust should be tamped down. Stone dust is preferred. The height between the tamped down sand and the stringline should equal the thickness of the brick or paver.

Now that you have a stable base, place a 1” pipe or ledger board the length of the walkway on either side of the walkway. Then using a flatedge, e.g. a 2”x4” board, slide it over the two lengths of the ledger board. In doing this you will create a level surface area to lay the pavers.

Patio Furniture – Picking the Style for Your Home

August 07, 2007 By: Mister Fixit Category: Home No Comments →

Teak and cedar furniture don’t need to be covered during the winter months, but furniture that is made from other types of wood do require protection during the winter. Ideally, patio furniture should be stored in the garage, but if that is not possible then it should be covered with plastic or another protective material that is securely fastened to it, and then stored in a sheltered area away from direct winter weather.

Wrought iron patio furniture is especially sturdy, due to its metal construction. It is generally painted black, but it can also be found in other colors such as; brown, cocoa, beige, and even white. This type of furniture uses cushions and pads to help add bright colors and make the pieces more comfortable for relaxing and lounging.

Caring for wrought iron patio furniture is very simple. Wash the pieces with a soap intended for automotive use, taking care to rinse well after washing. About twice a year, you should apply an automotive wax to the wrought iron to help protect, and preserve it. Washing, and waxing can be combined into a single step if you select an all-in-one product that contains both cleansing and waxing agents.

Before you begin waxing, you should inspect your wrought iron furniture for nicks, scratches, and abrasions to the finish. Use a can of matching spray paint to touch up these spots, then proceed with the protective wax application.

All about HIP

August 02, 2007 By: Mister Fixit Category: Home No Comments →

Home Information Pack (HIP), also referred to as the ‘Seller’s Pack’, is a set of documents conveying information about any property owned by an individual in England and Wales.

This means that, if any owner intends to sell the property, then he/she has to produce the set of HIP documents relating to the property. Sale Statements, The Energy Performance Certificate, Local authority Searches, title documents, etc., are some of the most important HIP documents.

Initially the concept of Home Information Packs surfaced to counter the routine mismanagement and delay and other hassles involved in the process of buying/selling home. The HIPs are also known to make the transactions faster and more explicit.

Home buying and selling was full of imperfections and gazumping until the introduction of Home Information Pack (aka HIP). Earlier the sellers used to have a tough time determining the exact price of the property and buyers suffered from lack of proper information. This information-gap was the main reason behind most of the property deal failures. According the reports an estimated loss of £350 million per year is entitled to unproductive home-sale attempts.

The Housing Act 2004 laid down the provision that every property-owner is obliged to produce an HIP before advertising his/her property. Thereafter, the state of affairs has undergone a commendable change resulting in a number of successful transactions. The accessible information makes it easier for a seller to quote a property.

On the other end, the uncomplicated proceeding also satisfied the buyers. The transparency offered by HIP allows no scope for any further re-negotiations and the exchange gets over in agreement with both the buyer and seller.

- Find your local Domestic Energy Assessors (aka DEAs) in our directory – Essentially the details in HIP have been bifurcated into two clearly defined portions – the required and authorized. The ‘required’ portion contains the compulsory information that includes Energy Performance Certificate, Local Authority and Drainage Searches, Sale Statement/Terms of Sale, the title documents for the property and most importantly the Home Information Pack Index.

Any person inclined to sell his/her property need to submit the documents regarding ‘required’ information. However, the documents should have been issued three months before of the date on which the property was marketed for the first time.

A person putting up his property for sale must and must submit these documents containing the ‘required’ information. Of course, one can only produce those documents that have been issued three months ahead of the date the property is marketed for the first time.

In case of a leasehold the property-owner is required to provide additional information on contact details for the property owner/management, legal details, a copy of the lease, recent service charge receipts and accounts and those associated with building insurance policy. Moreover, it must be accompanied by all applicable regulations along with the ‘required’ Home Information Pack documents.

The seller may also provide ‘authorized’ information present in documents such as the Legal Summary & Other Search Reports, Home Condition Report. Depending on the area, the seller may have to include search reports like mining search reports. The HIP may also incorporate two seller’s questionnaire forms – Home Contents Form and Home Use Form.

Custom Outdoor Kitchens Can Enhance Your Back Yard

July 29, 2007 By: Mister Fixit Category: Home, Kitchen No Comments →

Custom outdoor kitchens can be worked into your home’s existing style and design in number of ways. If the interior kitchen is near the rear exit of the home, then the two can be designed to flow seamlessly together. Dramatically increase the cooking space by simply opening a door. As you seek to make your outdoor kitchen unique, consider every design option.

The custom outdoor kitchens provide homeowners with the opportunity to create a unique entertainment environment. Typically, a backyard barbecue would be limited to a family party or a picnic, but with a complete outdoor kitchen, that common scenario is expanded. You may be the only one in your neighborhood who has the ability to host a fancy dinner party outside. Events that were typically tied to the formal dining room in the past, mostly because of its close proximity to the kitchen, can now be moved into the elegant and relaxing atmosphere of your outdoor living space.

The business of custom outdoor kitchens is becoming more competitive. As designers and building contractors are forced to compete for business, you the consumer have the most to gain. Manufacturers of outside kitchen products are continually seeking to meet and exceed the expectations of their customers. The highest quality of service, artisanship, and design will continue to be the norm in the realm of outdoor kitchens. Clients who have the space and are able make the investment will settle for nothing less.

Dealing with Clutter as a Family

July 28, 2007 By: Mister Fixit Category: Home No Comments →

To make the cleaning a success, try to assign age-appropriate tasks to your family members: give a younger child the responsibility of dusting. If you have a teenage technophile son or daughter, you could ask him or her to check over all the electronic equipment and run all the cords through an empty paper towel tube to prevent tangling. Getting the whole family involved is important – after all, the living room is a family area and since the whole family uses it, everyone should be participating in cleaning up. When a family area is clean and welcoming, it will encourage the family to keep the other areas clean as well.

The most difficult part is getting started in cutting back clutter but once you’ve taken that first step and involved your family, it becomes much easier. As stated before, don’t try to do everything in one day. It will take some time to get every room in your house in order but when you show a commitment to having a clean, inviting home, your family will follow suit almost unconsciously. But please do remember, it’s not about having a spotless, germ-free house, but it’s about creating a friendly, welcoming haven for you and your family to enjoy.

Patio Landscape Ideas for limited budgets

July 28, 2007 By: Mister Fixit Category: Home, Landscaping No Comments →

Accentuate your space with furniture that’s fashionable as well as functional. There’s no reason to have plain, resin deck chairs and unstable tables that offer little help to your patio landscape – you can go to stores that offer many models of wrought-iron furniture that looks luxurious. For added comfort, get some weather-resistant cushions to pad chairs or benches. If you choose to use regular cushions and throw covers for lounging outdoors, get a big, plastic container for quick and easy storage.

Stowed away underneath a bench and hidden by plants, a bin will keep your accessories dry and safe from the sun.

Your patio landscape should have plenty of plants that create a sense of lush fullness and vibrant greenery. Use low-maintenance perennials in bunches, or gussy up a flowerpot with vibrant annuals that will show off your patio landscape. You can find small kits for ponds and waterfalls available at many hardware stores, such as Home Depot, and can be set up for natural, soothing sounds in the background.

You can dress up your pond kit with plenty of plants and witty decorations, like painted rubber boots used as planters. Mirrors and sun-catchers are also attractive accessories for patio landscapes and they also provide the illusion of more space, as well as being interesting to look at.

Buying a new mattress? Here’s a few things you should know

July 27, 2007 By: Mister Fixit Category: Home No Comments →

Contrary to popular belief, the softness or firmness of a mattress does not affect the support level since most quality innerspring systems are actually the same among different beds. A softer bed can provide just as much support as a firmer one, the only difference is the amount of plush material placed on top of the springs. With some manufacturers, the cost of the mattress does affect the support system by varying the coil count. The higher the cost, the more coils there are to support the body.

However, the coil count of a mattress should not be your only consideration. I used to have a Stearns and Foster brand mattress which had the same lower coil count in every mattress no matter the price. Sterns and Foster maintained that their coils were made with a heavier weight metal and so they were able to provide more support with fewer coils. Before you ask which mattresses use heavier weight metal for their springs, just know that name brand innerspring mattresses all use excellent support systems. I recommend that you choose your mattress based on the softness or firmness you prefer.

The aerobed provides comfort and support together through the use of air. The softness is changed by using more or less air in the chamber. In some models, the firmness can be set to different levels on the different sides of the bed. This allows sleep partners to choose their own comfort level. Sleep Number Beds by Select Comfort are marketed as having a unique air chamber design which allows each sleeper to adjust the mattress to the firmness or softness they prefer. A waterbed uses a similar system using water instead of air. The firmness of a waterbed mattress however, is created through the use of multiple baffles to reduce the motion and sag allowed by the older “water balloon” models. Most modern waterbed mattresses are designed to look like standard mattresses and fit standard bed frames. One of the nice features of a waterbed is that the temperature can be easily adjusted.

Homeschooling Information

July 26, 2007 By: Mister Fixit Category: Home No Comments →

You can get homeschooling information by talking to other parents who do it. You can find them online, or you may be able to get a hold of them in your own community. Some communities now have homeschooling information networks, and they often share the responsibility of teaching with each other. You should gather as much information as you can find before you decide. It’s not a decision to take lightly, and is never something you should do just because you have one argument or disagreement with your child’s teacher. Many children are pulled out of school for stupid reasons and taught by parents who have no business teaching and their children are the ones that suffer in the end.
