Le Corbusier Sofa LC3, Plain but Great
Though he was basically recognized for his work in architecture, the Swiss-born French architect Le Corbusier is also accepted for the legacy he left behind in the field of furniture design. accepted as one of the pioneering fathers of the modernism movement of the early 20th century, Le Corbusier used the elements of modern architecture into making chairs, couches, and other furnishings that are light, plain and functional. And one type of that creations by Le Corbusier that has all of these characterisitics is the Le Corbusier Sofa LC3.
Fraction of the LC3 group which also comprises the LC3 Ottoman and the LC3 Meridienne, the Le Corbusier Sofa LC3 is a two to three-seat capacity sofa composed of a black leather seat and cushions surrounded by a rigid steel frame. The LC3 sofa, as it was at times called, was created by Le Corbusier in 1928 in partnership with his cousin Pierre Jeanneret and Charlotte Perriand, and is based on his Grand Comfort armchair design.
Made up of just around two parts, the Le Corbusier Sofa LC3 is equally simple in design. Its most distinctive feature, however, is its surface steel frame: rather than being covered under the layers of padding of the cushions, the frame covers the chair on the outside. The frame is finished from industrial grade tubular steel, and is cleaned to a shiny finish or coated with layers of chrome plating. The cushions, furthermore, are overflowed with either natural down or polyurethane and coated in black aniline leather.
Though Le Corbusier once mentioned that sofas are bourgeois; it is opposite that one of his most well-known designs is the Le Corbusier Sofa LC3. currently the real LC3 collection can be located in art museums and private collections worldwide, though re-editions based on the design are largely available on the market. presently the Cassina company of Milan is the permitted maker of the LC3 sofa re-editions.
